and at least in these polls, obama is ahead, florida, virginia and ohio. and that's is where this thing is tilting, it is just an incredibly difficult map for romney to navigate. >> bill: "wall street journal" i think is one of the most credible polls, and yet your poll showed 47-47 on the national poll. how do you explain that? >> it's not as if the national numbers are going to be wildly different from the states, but there are states that are standing out there in a strange island. there has been one poll in a month and a half that put romney up in ohio and that was a rasmussen poll like two days ago. we have one coming out this sunday which will be the last that we do. he was very big in the south. mitt romney's numbers are really big in texas and other places that don't necessarily matter. obama's numbers are going to be fairly mediocre in blue states so we're seeing a little bit of an imbalance. and then just the difficulty of these states that need to be won desperately by mitt romney. he should own florida right now for his own safety and he is cam

so if president obama wins ohio it would be 270 to -- he has got it. if mitt romney doesn't win ohio he has to win like all of the rest of the states. >> exactly. >> bill: so people have to realize, not that it is in the bag -- but president obama does have an advantage. >> one of my pollster friends laid this into me also is a lot of these polls are using the makeup from the 2010 election on 2008 election. and that's really the case of what we may see. the country is more latino than it used to be. a lot of these states that are on the border like north carolina have more african-americans than it did four years ago, so all -- we don't want to get too much into the methodology of polls, but the number of total voters exist may be bigger than what the media is including in their numbers. >> bill: maine, michigan minnesota, new mexico nevada pennsylvania, that those are basically -- these are toss-up states but say look like they are going to go for obama. >> i think the president is up something like six points in nevada which is a huge deal for him. >

places like ohio, in florida so i think it hurts president obama in the sense that it does interrupt that process. they've got a huge operation to get people out early voting in key states. on the other hand, i do think if you look at the polling there is -- there is a narrow lead for obama in a lot of these key swing states. and it seems like it would have the effect of freezing the race at least for a period of time as people just focus on other stuff, you know. focus on -- getting their power back or recovering from damage or whatever else. certainly fills up a lot of the news. so i think it kind of cuts both ways but if you buy into the idea that really mitt romney is the one who needs to make something happen here in the last week, i don't think this is what he really wants to see. >> bill: i would add one other factor which is, in the meantime, mitt romney is twiddling his thumbs and president obama is on national television and doing his job. and he's not just talking about it on television. he's actually doing his job. and going to fema headquarters and meeting with fema's le
